Cite while you write, in Apple, Pages (iWork 09) with Endnote

When I started my thesis I wanted to write it in Pages (iWorks 09). The university librarian initially told me that it was not possible to cite and write natively with the Mac's iWorks suite. However we soon found out that you actually can.
Having finished writing without using Microsoft Word at all I would like to share a small video for all those Mac people who would like to know how to write scientific papers in Pages. If I might say it works pretty smooth, and it is quite versatile as you can see at the following:

Growth Charts, 5-20 Years of Age

Another short post of an iPhone, iPad app. Growth charts of an unlimited number of patients, height, weight, BMI. Those charts can be valuable for the orthodontist to analyze the growth before and during dentofacial orthopedic treatments.
The application uses the database of the World Health Organization (WHO) for 5-19 years of age, with separate charts as well of 5-10, 10-15 and 15-19 years for further analysis.

A screenshot (height for age 5-10):

iPhone, iPad Anterior Maxillary Length/Width Calculator

A short post of an app I found at the Apple store, that calculates the width/length ratio of a patient's central and lateral maxillary incisors. Nothing fancy and nothing innovating here. However for someone interested in a tool like that you might as well have it.

An iPhone screen-shot of the app:

the app is 4$ and here's the iTunes link

Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics, iPad Version

Formerly called Revista Dental Press de Ortodontia e Ortopedia Facial, and after 14 years of life, it begun publishing an english version as well. That was at the start of 2010.

The brazilian journal now called Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics has launched an iPad app which is I believe the first of its kind for known orthodontic journals.

The first 6 issues will be free, and the app itself is free as well. I imagine that the in app subscriptions system will be activated after those 6 free issues, but nothing further is mentioned at this time.

Here's a screenshot from the app:

and the journal's website link : http://www.scielo.br/

The current issue consists of articles heavily focused at CBCT and 3D data oriented research material. Also an interesting interview of Dr.Cevidanes is included.

DIOSPORT

Diosport is an intraoral device that serves to restore the muscle balance of the body and thus allow the athlete to develop their true high performance.

This device works by decompression and reposition of the mandible by means of high-tech electronic mandibular deprogramming, objective measurement of masticatory muscles using surface electromyography and mandibular kinetography.

In conclusion, the stability is achieved by repositioning the jaw, allowing the muscle chains to operate in perfect harmony and increasing the airway providing better oxygenation.

For those interested in this subject I recommend to search for publications in the website of Diosport

Short Christmas Post: Concerning CBCT and it's Use in Orthodontics

Cone Beam CT has it's share of publicity and praise from the orthodontic world for some years now. Having personally worked extensively with New Tom and it's software I must say that it is a wonderful tool in the hands of the clinician.

It is not however the tool to replace conventional X-Rays, mainly because diagnostically it does not add to the evaluation of all orthodontic patients, and to treatment planing efficiency and outcome.

In cases of extensive oral surgery, syndromic and asymmetric patients, the 3D data files can be used as such and enhance treatment planing with benefit for the patient. It's increased dosage however is a serious drawback especially for simple orthodontic patients of young or adolescence age groups.

In addition to that there is a concern for the fact that the 3D data is not used in those cases. Instead 2D images are produced of lateral and frontal cephalogram as well as panoramic X-ray from the 3D raw data.

These concerns and criticism over the extensive usage of CBCT are presented at an article of the New York Times. This is the link to that article.

Automated Digital Tracing of Lateral Cephalograms, with Active Appearance Models

The Active Appearance Models were introduced in the 1998 paper "Interpreting Face Images using Active Appearance Models" by Edwards, Taylor and Cootes of Manchester University. Here is a link to Cootes website.

An example of the technic follows with the recognition of a face on a frontal extra-oral picture. A face is applied on the initial picture, and that drawing of the face is altered to match the facial characteristics of another person.

Digital Casts, The Market Today

For those not familiar with digital casts and their use in orthodontics:

  • Clinician takes a regular impression with alginate of the upper and lower arch of the patient, as well as a bite index with wax or silicone, in maximum inter-cuspidation.
  • Impressions and bite index are shipped to the company and poured - scanned.
  • With help of a software provided by the company, digital casts can be used for various measurements, vital for treatment planning of the orthodontic patient.
